Jess Guzman on Being a Health Advocate

Jessica Guzman had been working as a nurse for ten years, but decided to take a huge leap of faith and pursue her passion as a full-time Holistic Health Coach. Jessica had always been interested in nutritional genomics and learning how food affects everything - from our thoughts and emotions to the way we physically feel - and she began her health and wellness journey after experiencing postpartum depression. Her passion is to help women create a healthy plan that not only benefits them but compliments their journey. With the help of two amazing partners, she has created a retreat that provides women the tools and guidance to achieve mind-body balance.
When did you begin your journey into a health and wellness?
I began my health and wellness journey shortly after I became pregnant with my now 7-year-old daughter. At the time, I was experiencing symptoms of anxiety that were getting progressively worse. Even though I had been in the medical field for a few years, I was unaware of what was going on inside my own body. I went to the doctor who prescribed me a low dose of well-known anti-anxiety medication, and she mentioned that the worst-case scenario of being on this medication was that my unborn daughter would be born with a cleft lip.

From that point on, I decided that I needed to by my own health advocate, and I needed to do the same for my daughter. I began doing research on natural ways to reduce symptoms of anxiety during pregnancy. I found so many articles highlighting the healing and positive effects of prenatal yoga, the benefits of reducing dairy products, and the nourishing and healing effects of superfoods. I then began my journey in healthy eating.

Funnily enough, the green juices I was drinking were mostly fruit and I still enjoyed fast food restaurants, but the intention to eat healthier and be proactive for not only my health, but the health of my daughter, was a top priority for me. I’ve worked in clinical research companies and weight loss clinics and nothing stands truer to me than the power of healing through nutrition, movement, and mindfulness.

Any word of advice for anyone looking to kick start their wellness program this 2019?
Most of us get excited about starting a new meal plan and or exercise routine and I love that excitement, but I’d also like to invite everyone to give yourself permission to start where you’re at. Meaning, if you normally have cereal for breakfast, try substituting it for a healthier version that’s lower in sugar, free of artificial colors and dyes. Begin by asking yourself how you can upgrade your current lifestyle to a healthier version. Most importantly, be patient with yourself and surround yourself with people who will encourage a healthy lifestyle.
