Delfina Gonzalez on How to Ignite Your Personal Power

Delfina Gonzalez is a single mom of 3 boys. She attended the University of Central Missouri and majored in Business Administration with an emphasis in Marketing. She graduated ready to “conquer the world,” but after two years in Corporate America, she realized that the only thing that she had been conquering was a 9-5 job and a paycheck to paycheck lifestyle! She took a leap of faith, quit her job, and decided to pursue her passion in health and fitness as a Lifestyle Coach. Nowadays, Delfina’s passion is to empower women to celebrate their bodies, honor their voices, recognize their talents, ignite their personal power, and begin the ripple effect to extend this empowerment through the community we live in and beyond.
When did you begin incorporating self-care into your life?
I began to incorporate self-care in to my life 10 years ago. I had just gotten divorced and instantly become a young single mom of three little boys. Raising them on my own, I realized that I truly didn’t know me -- who was Delfina Gonzalez? I knew I was meant to be more and do more! So, I enrolled in college to pursue a 4-year college degree. At home, I also started reading personal development books. The first book I read was The Mastery of Love by Don Miguel Ruiz. I enrolled at a local gym and would attend group workouts 2-3 times a week to surround myself with like-minded women. I would ask as much as I could about nutrition because I quickly realized how essential it was.

What advice do you have for women who are trying to get healthier in this new year?
From my personal experience, I would recommend all of our amigas start with a plan. What do you want to accomplish? Lose 20 pounds? Implement a healthy lifestyle? Gain muscle? Stay active? Whatever that is, write it down. This is THE most important thing you can do! Writing down your goals DOUBLES your success! Tracking your progress in a journal every day will keep you accountable, and it's so powerful to reflect on how you feel mentally and physically throughout this journey.

1. HIIT Workouts
: This is training technique in which you give all-out, one hundred percent effort through quick, intense bursts of exercise, followed by short, sometimes active, recovery periods. This type of training gets and keeps your heart rate up and burns more fat in less time.

2. Fasted Cardio: Our body is in a fasted state when you have not eaten for at least 8 hours. A good night’s sleep is a sufficient amount of time to get your body into a fasted state. When insulin levels are low because you haven’t eaten, your body has no choice but to burn fat. Therefore, jumping into a fasted cardio as soon as you wake up for about 30 minutes, then straight to breakfast after you’re done is key.

3. Yoga: Yoga is a great way to work on your flexibility and strength. Just about everyone can do it, too -- it's not just for people who can touch their toes or want to meditate. My favorite part of yoga is the mental state it puts me in.

4. Spinning: When you spin, your entire body will slowly but surely start to firm up. Spinning targets the large muscle groups (calves, hamstrings and thighs) in your legs to shape up fast, while strengthening the abdominal muscles necessary to maintain your upper body rhythm.

5. Weight Training: To achieve an optimal level of fitness with the lean body you desire, weight training is essential. If, like so many other mistaken women, you avoid lifting because you are terrified of becoming "bulky," then you're missing out on one of the best fat-burning methods around! It truly changes your body shape. You may think your genes determine the way you look, but that's not necessarily true. Weight training can slim you down, create new curves, and help avoid the lower tummy problems.
